The Anti Bomb Squad of the Kano State Police Command on Monday evening
defused a bomb planted close to a mosque by the side of the Social
Science Department at the New Site of the Bayero University, Kano (BUK).
The bomb, which was found inside a polythene bag, had, according to the
police, only a few minutes left to explode when the specialists of the
anti bomb squad successfully defused it.
An eyewitness, who pleaded anonymity, told THISDAY that the suspicious
looking bag was first noticed at about 5.45 pm and following this
development, security agencies were notified and they quickly rushed to
the scene. On inspection, they discovered that the bomb had only about
25 minutes to explode before they were able to defuse it successfully.
State Police spokesman, Musa Magaji Majiya (ASP) confirmed the incident to THISDAY.
“This evening, a bomb was discovered inside a polythene bag at Bayero
University’s new site and our men hurriedly rushed to the area and were
able to defuse the explosives. As I’m talking to you, we thank God that
nothing happened,” he said.
The latest incident is coming barely 24 hours after about 20 people
were killed when suspected Boko Haram sect members attacked worshipers
at the Old Campus of the university.
Our correspondent, who visited the university in the evening, noticed intense security measures at the university.
Joint Military Task Force (JTF) personnel were also sighted at
different locations of the road leading to the university monitoring the
movement of people.
